Volumetric paper mushroom with your own hands: simple and effective fall decoration

If you want to create a warm autumn atmosphere in your home or decorate a window sill, children's exhibition or school composition, a three-dimensional paper mushroom will be a great option. This craft is easy to assemble from available materials, does not require glue in difficult places and is well suited for joint creativity with children.

Today we are going to make a boletus - a recognizable, sturdy mushroom with a brown cap and a light stalk. It can be placed on a stand or included in a whole "forest" installation with leaves, moss, acorns and other natural elements.

What you'll need

• Brown paper for the hat
• Light-colored paper (white, beige, light yellow) - for the foot
• Cardboard base or heavy paper (optional)
• Glue stick or PVA
• Scissors
• Pencil, ruler
• A little absorbent cotton or green paper - for "moss" (decoration)

Step 1: Shape the cap

Take a sheet of brown A4 paper and fold it in half on the short side. Then round one of the long sides - this will be the outline of the hat. Carefully cut out a semicircle - you can use a circular or trace a plate.

Unfold - you get a circle with a fold in the middle. Now make 6-8 cuts along the edge, not reaching the center, and slightly bend the resulting petals down. This will give the hat volume. To fix the shape, you can glue the petals from the underside - but most often they hold their shape well enough.

Step 2: Mushroom stem

For the foot, take a light-colored piece of paper and cut out a rectangle of about 10×15 cm. Twist it into a tight tube and glue along the side seam. Flatten the bottom edge a little and cut it into 4-6 strips, then fold them outwards - this is necessary to glue the leg to the stand.

The top of the stem can be slightly flattened and glued from the inside to the center of the cap. This makes a secure construction: the cap is on top, the stem is at the bottom, and it is stable.

Step 3: Stand and decor

If you want the mushroom to stand on a stand, cut a circle or oval out of green paper or cardboard. Glue the "stem" of the mushroom to the center, and around it you can add absorbent cotton moss, paper leaves, painted or cut acorns, and small stones.

You can also make several mushrooms of different sizes, with dark and light colored caps, and make a whole "bed" of mushrooms. A great option for a school exhibition or themed corner.

Design options

• The cap can be additionally decorated with white dots to make a flytrap
• If there is brown cardboard, the hat will be tighter and hold its shape better
• Instead of a stand, you can plant the mushroom in a plastic container with expanded clay or pebbles
• Add butterflies, leaves, grass and you have a real paper forest landscape

Useful tips

• When twisting the stem, make sure it is tight - otherwise the mushroom will be wobbly
• You can put a rolled up piece of cardboard inside the leg for strength
• The hat is convenient to make from double-sided paper - it looks neat from either side
• Use gouache or watercolor to decorate - you can add light stippling along the brim of the hat
